A child’s development includes both physical and emotional stages. We frequently concentrate on the stages of our child’s physical development and have little insight or understanding about the importance of our child’s emotional development. Understanding the stages of your child’s emotional development will help you to make sense of your child’s behaviour. It will help you to think about and acknowledge how your child might be feeling at a particular time and enable you to help him/her to work through what has been experienced. It is important to remember that each child develops in his/her own unique way depending on personality and at different rates from each other.

1. Child should be put to bed drowsy but awake.

2. Child should fall asleep in their bed.

3. Soft Lighting

4. A good bedtime routine is the secret to children sleeping well:

5. Supper

6. Teeth brushing

7. Storytime

1. No TV in the hour before bed

2. No night time feeds after 6 months

3. No naps after 3.30p.m. after 9 months

4. Support your child to learn how to get themselves to sleep without parental intervention (i.e. rubbing their back, rocking, holding their hand, giving bottle)

5. No music/lights in bedroom

When Parents don’t get Enough Sleep it can:

1. Impact their relationship

2. Affect their intimacy

3. Affect their emotional well-being

4. Add to feelings of depression

When Children do not get Enough Sleep:

(a) Their behaviour can be affected.

(b) Their ability to learn and to function can be impaired

(c) They can become hyperactive

(d) They may become drowsy during the day and need naps
