Calling Teenagers Aged 12 – 18 years

Do you know a teenager who would be interested in exploring what citizenship means?

A Youth Citizenship programme will be running in Letterkenny and Buncrana on Friday evenings 7-8:30pm from mid November (not 1st November as stated on the posters) and participants will be engaged for 26 hours as follows:
  • 12 workshops delivered over 12 x 1 ½ hours sessions.
  • Joint Activity 4 hours
  • Community Event 4 hours
The Youth Citizenship & Leadership Programmes focus on youth coming from cross community backgrounds including indigenous Irish Catholics and Protestants along with other cultures in Irish society. Participants learn about the similarities and differences of their cultural background to
eliminate perceptions.  To build a connection between participants the programme will directly address current issues affecting youth such as negative impacts of social media, bullying, racism, sectarianism and discrimination based on class and difference.  The Programme aims to build the
confidence, personal development and propensity of participants to understand and accept difference. The programme is fully funded by SEUPB and there is no cost to the participants. Items we will cover includes:
  • Define what citizenship means to them
  • Research their community’s needs
  • Illustrate ways in which to benefit their community
  • Plan a project to meet an identified need using a planning model
  • Organise and manage their project
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of their project

This project is run on a cross community basis by the Belfast Youth Project which is part of the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre. You can contact Neil Gallagher for more information on 074 9123890.

We are dependent on the community’s input to develop and enhance our service delivery.

We have an open evening on Tuesday 11th December 6-8pm. Why not come along and see what is on offer.

What is a Family Resource Centre

Donegal is about to get its tenth Family Resource Centre based in the Finn Valley.

Donegal’s Family Resource Centres are part of Ireland’s largest family support programme providing services to families living in disadvantaged areas across the country.

What do Donegal’s Family Resource Centres do?

They provide information, advice and support.  Information on services and options available locally, advice on accessing rights and entitlements and one-to-one support to families on a range of issues. The Family Resource Centre’s act as a focal point for onward referrals to main stream services.

They also provide services in their centres to local families such as Parent and Toddler groups, Breastfeeding support groups, Parenting programmes, Carer’s groups and Bereavement groups. Many of the Family Resource Centres run their own local counselling services and Social Prescribing services which work together with GPs and health professionals to help fill the gap in services to families.

They offer a range of after-school activities for children; sports, arts and homework clubs as well as specialist learning support for children with particular needs such as dyslexia.

The Family Resource Centres in Donegal work closely with Donegal E&TB to provide a wide range of community education classes for adults at their centres such as arts and crafts, computer and IT classes, fitness and wellbeing classes.

In addition Family Resource Centres work together with volunteers from the community to develop things like Men’s Sheds, Breakfast Clubs, Community Gardens, Writer’s Groups and Walking Groups. They often hold events and open days for health screening, wellbeing and pampering and family fun days.

Please drop into your local Family Resource Centre you will always find a friendly face, a staff member who will listen and treat your enquiry in total confidence.

Shaping Ourselves and Our Children

“Shaping Ourselves and Our Children”

SOOC is an exciting new course for parents to have fun and learn about how their children develop their emotional and social skills at home.  Parents will learn how to support their children to develop these skills and how these will benefit their children later at school, in their community and throughout their lives.

Shaping ourselves and our children will help us as parents explore:

  • Hopes and fears we have for our children and their future
  • How home shapes our children for the world outside
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Communication skills – what parents say and what children hear
  • Learning through Play
  • Respect for diversity and our changing communities.

Each course runs for 4 hours X 4 days under the guidance of warm and supportive tutors, lunch is provided and there is a childcare allowance for parents who need childcare.  On day four of the course parents and children come together for an interactive play session.

To enrol on the next course please give details to your family visitor, nearest Lifestart office or phone Mary at 048 71 365 363
